The Orange Spotlight
Heron Issue 1: Leave Me As I Lessen by Mel Bosworth (Folded Word, July 2009)
I am not sure why it has taken me so long to write about Folded Word, but it was a copy of Heron Issue 1, neatly tucked inside a nice thank you note from Mel Bosworth, that brought me to write. What is so revolutionary about Folded Word is not that they utilize so many platforms to deliver literature, but that more presses don't operate this way. Whether it is through Twitter, Youtube, mp3s, pdf, or whatever maybe next, Folded Word is dedicated to fully utilizing every tool available.
Onto Heron Issue 1, Mel Bosworth shows his ability to do more with less and packs a full and slightly disturbing story into tiny downloadable package. Following the last minutes of a melting man at the beach, Mel paints the scene while building upon only minimal details. He describes his characters in short meaningful bursts, but leaves the main character to "lessen" into the waves. Created specifically for this project, Mel has launched this aspect of Folded Word in a great direction.
